The Importance Of Checking In On Your Family
When the elderly and vulnerable individuals are left without regular contact or care, the consequences can be serious—and in many cases, irreversible. In Australia 1 in 3 people over 65 suffer a fall every year.
Emergencies may go unseen
A missed moment can mean the difference between life and tragedy. Regular contact ensures someone is always watching out.
Isolation becomes dangerous
Loneliness isn’t just emotional—it’s physical. Social isolation has been linked to depression, cognitive decline, and even increased risk of mortality.
Health issues can go unnoticed
Without regular check-ins, medical concerns like falls, confusion, or illness may go unreported until it’s too late.
Mental wellbeing declines
A simple conversation can uplift someone’s day. Without it, anxiety and sadness can deepen over time.
Families live in uncertainty
Loved ones may feel guilty or anxious, wondering if they’ve done enough, especially when they can’t check in personally every day.
Easy prey for scammers
Fraudulent door to door sales and charity collectors, unscrupulous trades persons and online scammers prey on the elderly, often stealing their life savings. Regular contact helps detect and prevent exploitation.

What people are saying about Family Sure
At Family Sure, nothing matters more than the trust families place in us. Our mission is to bring peace of mind and genuine care to your loved ones, and these words from our clients and medical professionals reflect the difference we make every day.
“As a health professional, time and time again I've observed factors such as social isolation, loneliness and caregiving deficits significantly impacting the quality of life of my patients, even contributing to their mortality and morbidity, particularly in the elderly ….The services offered by Family Sure are pragmatic solutions to address these gaps and I have the utmost faith that they will be undertaken with the highest levels of empathy and kindness.”
“The team at Family Sure bring a wealth of experience and genuine passion to the care they provide. Their approach is centred on dignity and respect, ensuring that every individual is supported with compassion and understanding. It’s clear that for Family Sure, caring for people is more than a service—it’s a commitment to making a positive difference in people’s lives.”
“I would highly recommend the Family Sure team. The care and compassion demonstrated by Family Sure staff makes a positive difference to our elderly and vulnerable community. The team goes above and beyond to ensure participants are comforted, engaged, and happy throughout their calls. The ‘Family Sure Participant Reports’ greatly assists us to understand and anticipate family needs."
“Ongoing caregiving is essential in Australia's ageing society, yet many elderly patients continue to face social isolation, limited family support, and complex health and social needs. These challenges often compromise recovery and overall quality of life. FamilySure offers a practical and compassionate solution by providing tailored support that bridges gaps in discharge planning and community care, helping older Australians remain safe, independent, and connected. Based on my professional experience, I confidently recommend FamilySure as a trusted service for patients and their families.”

Couldn’t I do this myself?
Yes of course you could but the whole point our service is this – life gets chaotic sometimes. You try your best to check in, but something happens and then you realise its been days even more then a week before you spoke to the person in your family who relies on you.
Also, when you speak to your family they want to feel like you are ringing because you genuinely care, they don’t want to burden you or become the duty you must attend to.
With Family Sure we never miss a call, we keep you informed, and we enter into real conversations so your loved one feels reassured, not lonely or susceptible.
My family members have a mobile phone they don’t need this service.
At Family Sure we work to a zero-mission failure standard. That means you can rely on us to check in on the important people in your life. Our service surpasses phones because our service doesn’t rely on;
- The phone being in reach if they have fallen
- Your loved one being conscious to answer
- The phone being charged and having credit
- Having the mental capacity during or after an incident to make a call
- People having a strong familiarity with technology
Certainly a phone cannot also help prevent your loved one from getting scammed. Family Sure can do this and more.
Finally, a mobile phone does not give you a sense of connection. It’s a channel that allows you to connect but unless someone uses it, then the social and emotional connection is missing for your family member, which is vital in a world where we are increasingly disconnected from our family. Family sure uses the phone to connect and raises the alarm when contact isn’t achieved.
I feel the investment of a daily check across the week is outside of my budget?
If your budget does not accommodate the price of a daily service we can tailor our check in calls to a schedule that is more budget friendly. We recommend calling every day to ensure your loved one is safe and well and not stranded for long periods of time. We can change our service frequency however to operate for you only on a weekday, every second or third day right down to one day per week. The choice is yours.
Some of our clients also share the cost of the service between multiple family members. By doing this they share the cost of the investment between themselves so no one member has to carry the financial load alone.
From our experience however, we ask everyone to consider the frailty of their loved ones and the very real risk that something could happen to them. From our observation the cost of guilt always outstrips the investment required to ensure the safety of your family.
My loved one has a duress button or a personal medical alarm device?
These devices may be very useful but they are not a replacement for the Family Sure Service. At Family Sure our service goes beyond the service that such medical alert devices provide. Here’s how:
- Many people that need these devices forget to carry them around the house or home. As such they cannot be used when the worst happens.
- These devices often rely on the user having a fall or your loved one activating the alert function manually. This has limited functionality as certain medical episodes such as strokes can cause paralysis and prevent a person from being able to activate the device. Further if your loved one has an episode in a chair or whilst in bed the fall alert will not be triggered and they could be left for days without assistance.
- Family Safe does not require charging or fresh batteries to be relied upon to make your loved one safe.
- Medical alarms and medical alert devices do not reduce loneliness & isolation like Family Sure does.
- Medical duress alarms and / or medical call buttons do not recognise rapid cognitive decline which might be an indicator of more serious issues that are occurring for your loved one.
- Duress buttons and medical alarms are not able to give answers to common questions when your loved one needs help with issues as they come up.
- Fall recognition devices and medical alert alarms are unable to help prevent your family member being scammed as Family Sure does.
Doesn’t the apple watch provide the same service through its fall detection app?
The apple watch may be useful, much like a personal medical alarm type device, however it is still not a substitute for the Family Sure service. At Family Sure our service goes beyond the service that such medical alert devices provide. Here’s how:
- The Apple watch needs to be charged regularly to work. This creates a number of points of potential failure being the battery may run out without the wearer realising and hence the protection is gone. Additionally, whilst it is being charged the user isn’t wearing it and there is no protection.
- Your loved one may forget to put the watch on. As the watch needs to be regularly charged it is often being taken off and is easily forgotten. Think about how often you have forgotten to put on your watch, your purse or wallet, or forgotten where you left your keys. This becomes a point of failure that opens your loved one to increased risk.
- These watches rely on the user having a fall. This has limited functionality because if your loved one has an episode in a chair or whilst in bed the fall alert will not be triggered and they could be left for days without assistance.
- The apple watch does not reduce loneliness & isolation like Family Sure does.
- The apple watch fall detection application does not recognise rapid cognitive decline which might be an indicator of more serious issues that are occurring for your loved one.
- The Apple Watch Fall Detection App is not able to give answers to common questions when your loved one needs help with issues as they come about.
- The Apple watch and Fall Detection Application is unable to help prevent your family member from being scammed like Family Sure does.
Maybe I could get the neighbours to help do this instead.
Theres a well-known quote being “I have always depended on the kindness of strangers.” In today’s world, do you really want to trust the welfare of your loved ones into the hands of strangers. It’s sad but true that this can be a bad idea for many reasons – here’s just a few;
- Too polite to say no: You might find the neighbours to your loved ones are just as busy as you and too polite to reject your request. But whilst they accept your request with the best of intentions, in reality they have no more time than you and are just as likely to forget about checking in regularly. Then you have a false sense of security.
- Zero fail safe’s: If your neighbour forgets to check in now and then, what system is in place to make sure that your loved one is checked on? No one is asking the neighbours to send an email everyday outlining how the check in on their family member went.
- They may not be very nice: Too many times, we have seen people stealing, assaulting and manipulating their vulnerable neighbours. All staff of Family Sure have a Criminal Record check and are subject to strict privacy and confidentiality contract clauses and policies. You may just be inviting the fox into the hen house if you involve their neighbours.
- Longevity: The neighbours to your loved one may help out for a little while but its too much to ask these people to carry out such a task on a long-term basis. Family sure operate on a zero-fail policy. Each check in is backed by a call report and a clearly defined escalation policy should there be any problem reaching your neighbour.
Does homecare do something like this?
No. Home Care provides a service that helps people with tasks around the house. The Home Care service does not provide a check in service. The Family Sure welfare check system can assist with home care matters as we can keep track of issues that Home Care may be required to attend to for your loved one.
